What is Specialty Coffee?

Specialty Coffee, sometimes called “gourmet” or “premium” coffee, is grown in the world’s most ideal coffee producing climates.  They tend to feature distinctive flavors which are shaped by the unique characteristics of the soil that produces them.  Soil, altitude, and climate of a coffee growing area will impact the body of the coffee bean, as well as its flavor and aroma.  It must also pass a stringent certification process to ensure that it is free of flaws and imperfections.

While it is interesting to learn more about the different coffee growing regions in the world from a financial perspective it is also important, if you really love coffee, to know about the lives of the people who provide the brew that we cherish.  With the rise of coffee’s popularity, there is a large demand on coffee production.  As a result, traditional coffee farming methods have been reshaped in ways that cause damage to the environment and the economic livelihood of farmers. This has given rise to the Fair Trade and Organic Coffee Movement.

Fair Trade Coffee

Fair Trade Coffee is designed to assist poor coffee farmers that often produce high quality gourmet coffee in organic conditions.  Smaller coffee farmers have been forced to either change their techniques or lose their farms due to lowering profits brought in by coffee. This has created a new type of coffee that is growing in popularity and is closely aligned with the organic coffee movement:  Fair Trade Coffee.

Due to our commitment to the sustainability of the coffee trade we, at Plum Island Coffee Roasters, do our part to support and purchase certified Organic and Fair Trade coffee whenever possible.  By supporting these programs not only do we give back to the environment, but also to the farmers who enable great coffee to be a fulfilling part of our lives.

So from cultivation to cup, give cheers and enjoy our great coffee!
